Apartment Rental Living - Hints and Tips For Moving With Children
By Christine OKelly

When moving to an apartment for rent, there always seems to be a lot chaos and stress until things settle down. The same holds true for children who often don't understand why they have to leave behind their friends and the life they are familiar with. Several steps can be taken to ensure the move to the new apartment rental runs as smoothly as possible.

Prior To The Move

Children often don't understand why they are moving and feel left out of the process. To prevent this, take time to talk to your kids about why you are moving to a different apartment rental. You might also want to set out a timeline for the move that they can follow along so that they always know what to expect.

It is important to include your children in the entire process. Ask them for their opinion on the apartment for rent you looked at or which room they would like to have. Give them some of the responsibility for the move. Put each child in charge of packing their toys or they can work with you in each room to pack up your belongings and clean up.

During The Move

Living out of a box for the week or two before the move can be nothing short of a nightmare. Leave the items you use on a daily basis unpacked until the morning of the move. You might also want to allow children to fill a backpack with their favorite items.

When it is time to move to the new apartment for rent, you will need to decide what to do with the kids. Older children can help move some of the lighter boxes and items that will not break when dropped. For younger ones, things will go faster and easier if a friend, family member, or babysitter can take the kids while the furniture and other large items are being carried.

After Moving To The Apartment Rental

Just like before the deadline day, include your children in the process of unpacking and putting things away. Find out how they would like to store their things and ask for their decorating ideas. You don't have to do what they say, but just asking their opinion is enough to keep them involved in the process. Try to return to a normal routine as soon as possible and keep it as close to the one you had before as you can.

Perhaps the most important part of moving to a new apartment for rent is to take time for each child throughout the process. If you find things getting stressful, stop for a few minutes and play a game or go for a walk. Once things settle down, be sure to take time each day to find out how things are going and how they like their new home. While you can't always do things at a child's pace, taking extra steps to make them feel important and involved will eliminate a lot of the problems that occur when moving to a new apartment rental.
